Anyone that has worked in the Department of Correction knows there is no such thing as an ordinary day. Staff working in this field are trained to be vigilant in ensuring that safety and security is paramount for staff, offenders, as well as the public. On August 30, 2017, Offender Joshua Stam, DOC#178608 was being transported back to Miami Correctional Facility (MCF) from a court appearance in Decatur County, IN when he became combative and tried overtaking Decatur County Transport Officer David Weakley.

Mary Lou Morgan, PEN Industries staff, was leaving MCF when she came upon the incident. Morgan quickly alerted other staff near the area which aided tremendously in the prevention of further injuries to Officer Weakley. Terry Rivera, Auto Foreman and Jonah Bunch, Auto Repair staff, also responded immediately to the emergency situation to provide aid to Officer Weakley and successfully restrained Offender Stam from his aggressive and violent assault. Additional MCF staff responded to render aid as well. This incident could have quickly escalated but the quick response and selfless acts of these staff members undoubtedly saved further injuries from occurring.

Mary Lou Morgan, Terry Rivera, and Jonah Bunch each received Letters of Appreciation from IDOC Commissioner Rob Carter and a Commissioner’s Coin of Excellence. Additionally, they each received a Cash Bonus Award in the amount of $1,000.

Commissioner Carter stated, “You have willingly shown your co-workers and peers that effort and outstanding performance can be rewarded. The award represents a drive for results we hope everyone at Miami Correctional Facility will aspire to.” Commissioner Carter also noted, “You have contributed to the betterment of the Department of Correction with this achievement.” MCF Interim Warden and Executive Director of Northern Operations William K. Wilson stated, “I couldn’t be more proud of these fellow staff members for their heroic efforts with assisting law enforcement and their courageous acts are both commendable and exceptional.”
