The mighty Lewis Cass Kings boys’ basketball team battled and defeated the Tipton Blue Devils on Friday Dec. 16. The Kings continue its winning streak (4-0) with a 57-46 win over the Class 3A No. 8-ranked Blue Devils (6-1).

Evan Ohman, a senior, led the Kings with 19 points. Kace Kitchel, a junior, followed with 13 points. Cohen Nies, also a senior, added nine points. Kitchel led the Kings in rebounds with five offensive and five defensive rebounds ending the game with a double-double. Nies also added five offensive rebounds and four defensive. Overall, the Kings shot 46 percent from the field.

“We’ve been a second-half team all along,” said head coach Jon Kitchel. “We just have to put four quarters together.”

The Kings drastically improved its free throw percentage after their win over the Carroll Cougars on Dec.10, which was 44 percent. The Kings shot 68 percent at the line against Tipton, hitting 13 of 19 attempts. The team only sacrificed four turnovers which did not differ much from the five they had during the Carroll game. Kitchel and Nies also defended the court well with a combined number of eight blocked shots.

“Evan and Alec were the difference. Evan on the offensive and defensive end and Alec on the defensive end,” said Kitchel. “Overall, the Kings’ senior leadership has been the difference for the team. The senior class this year pushes the team to their fullest potential. On and off the court, the senior class represents the team well.”

The undefeated start of the Kings season reflects the 2003 2A state champions that went undefeated at 26-0.

The Kings compete in the Cass County Tournament, facing Pioneer at 10 a.m. on Dec. 22. The consolation and championship games start at 6 and 8 p.m. The Kings will also face the Rochester Zebras on the road on Dec. 27.
