The Logansport Berries were crowned champions of the IHSAA Logansport Girls Tennis Sectional for the fourth consecutive year. Following a close 3-2 win over Lewis Cass in the semi-final round, the Berries topped Twin Lakes 3-2 to claim the title.

In single play, No. 1 Whitney Jennings defeated Courtney Bowsman 6-3, 6-2 while No. 3 Abby Geer won over Mattie-Catherine Mote 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Brooke Bullard lost to Halston Lehocky 6-4, 7-5 – but by that time the Berries had already clinched the title.

The No. 2 doubles squad of Kayleigh Dance and Rachel Sims took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ashley Halsen and Madison Hardebeck. The No. 1 doubles duo of Karli Armstrong and Christine Shepler lost 6-1, 6-1 to Leah Crabb and Chayse Lehocky.

The Berries followed that win with an opening round 4-1 victory over Eastern in the IHSAA Kokomo Regional.

Jennings defeated Courtney Clark 6-0, 6-1 and Bullard downed Riley Kanable 6-3, 6-0 in singles action. Eastern’s lone point came at No. 3 singles, as Claire Holkenbrink defeated Geer 7-5, 6-0.

In doubles, Armstrong and Shepler edged Marie Holkenbrink and Megan Dean in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 thriller. Dance and Sims scored the fourth Berries point with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Marissa Evenson and Laura White.

Logansport (15-5) was set to play defending state champion and top-ranked Carmel in the regional final after the Kokomo Herald deadline. The Greyhounds defeated Harrison 5-0 in its opening match. Carmel has won six state championships in girls tennis, including three of the last five (2009, 2011, 2013).

Jennings, the 2014 Indiana Miss Basketball and 2013 all-state honorable mention tennis star, improved her record to 20-0 this season. She is an incredible 44-1 in the last two seasons and 88-6 in her four-year varsity career. Jennings has won six team sectional titles while playing for the Berries – four in tennis and two in basketball. Last season, the Lady Berries basketball team advanced to the IHSAA Class 4A Final Four.

The sectional title was the 14th for the Lady Berries, joining wins in 1982, 1983, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The squad will be looking for its first regional title.
